Bill Flowers is an Australian painter, printmaker, cartoonist, animator & snake wrangler who lives in Northwest, Tasmania. His paintings include subjects such as snakes, Tasmanian Devils, and other predators, often getting close to his subjects in the wild.
Bill has been an integral part of the Artist on Board program aboard the Spirit of Tasmania during summer months, which is an initiative created by Creature Tales delivering entertainment services. In 2016, Bill produced a series of paintings called “Castaways on Preservation Island” to an audience of passengers over the course of day crossings from Melbourne to Devonport. The theme was to tell the story of the vessel Sydney Cove (named for its port of destination), that left Bengal in February 1797 and was struck by ill fortune when wrecked on Preservation Island, an island in Bass Strait. She was among the first ships wrecked on the east coast of Australia.
His paintings depict the perilous journey the sailors took and their untimely end. The series of seven paintings capture the enormity of the task they undertook and the extremes they faced, with only 3 of survivors from a crew of seventeen.
The paintings have been donated by Spirit of Tasmania to the City of Devonport Lions Club to raise money towards the purchase of a 20-seater bus for the School of Special Education. The cost of this the bus upon completion will exceed $100,000.
